Broken For His Glory

“It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.”

NICK VUJICIC IS a public speaker and author. In the last decade, he has spoken to more than 3 million people in more than twenty-four countries on five continents, challenging audiences to live life to the fullest and embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ. But Nick almost gave up on life at the tender age of ten years old.

You see, Nick was born with Tetra-Amelia Syndrome, and he has no arms or legs. When he was a child, the taunts he received at school so depressed him that he tried to drown himself in the bathtub. But then Nick met Jesus and discovered that God loves him and has a special purpose for his life. Now he travels the world, sharing Jesus’ love with everyone he meets.

In the ancient world, people born with disabilities were considered cursed by God because of their sin. In John’s Gospel, Jesus confronts this worldview (John 9). Our challenges are not divine accidents, and they’re not punishments; instead, they are a means of displaying God’s power. As the apostle Paul discovered in his own life, “[Christ’s] power is perfected in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9, HCSB).

Have you considered that God may be using your unique challenges to make Himself known to the people around you? Like Nick Vujicic, you may discover that an obstacle you’ve been trying to overcome may be the very thing God uses to accomplish His purpose in your life.
