Taking Care of Kids

Blessed are those who help the poor.

Proverbs 14:21

My husband and I first heard about a child sponsorship program at a local concert. The musicians performing that night talked about the children they sponsored and encouraged others to sign up to sponsor a child themselves.

A booth was set up in the back of the room with pictures and information on children from around the world. My husband and I were deeply moved, and having no children of our own yet, we decided it would be a good thing for us to do before that season of life began. More than ten years later, and after becoming the parents to four children, we still sponsor the child we committed to care for that night. We’ve gotten to know him and his family over the years through letters and pictures, and he’s seen our family grow and change as well. It has been a beautiful way for us to feel like we are caring for children as God does, not only by raising kids in our own home, but by supporting another child and another family.

Sometimes, in light of the many problems in our world, taking care of just one child or person can seem very insignificant, maybe even inconsequential. But I’m sure if you asked the young man we sponsor, he would tell you otherwise. If everyone were to take care of just one child, think of what a difference we could make regarding issues of homelessness, hunger, education, and medical care. We could truly change the world, one person at a time.

Have you ever sponsored a child or considered it? Even if you are not able to do so, we can all take the time to pray for children who are facing hardships or for an issue that affects children around the world. Scripture reminds us that those who help the poor are blessed, and so often God uses us as his vessels of kindness toward others. Sponsoring our child has reminded us each month of the plight of others around the world and how a simple donation can do a lot of good in one person’s life.
