Early Delivery

Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith.

Galatians 6:10

I love coffee. While I clearly have a caffeine addiction, I’ve discovered that I am in love with the ritual of coffee more than with the energy jolt it provides. I love to start each workday with my hands wrapped around my favorite handmade coffee cup while I let the hot liquid inside slowly warm my fingers. This little ritual fills me with peace as I peruse my e-mail inbox, listen to my voice mails, and start tackling my daily to-do list.

One day, I arrived at the office earlier than normal. I was the first coffee drinker on my side of the building to arrive, so when I rounded the corner to the closest kiosk, I discovered that no one had made coffee yet. I started brewing the first pot and walked away, leaving my cup sitting there with the intention of coming back soon. Upon returning to my office, I became so engrossed in preparing for an early-morning meeting that my cup and my java jolt were forgotten.

Hearing a soft knock at my door, I looked up to see a coworker I don’t know well standing in the doorway, holding my coffee mug. She entered, handed me the freshly brewed beverage, and said, “I know you love coffee, so I thought I’d bring you your cup.”

In the grand scheme of things, it was a small gesture. She simply filled my mug and walked it to my office. But it was so unexpected that it was spectacularly sweet, and it made my entire morning. In fact, it made my entire day.

Scripture calls us to do good to people every time we have the opportunity. Sometimes this takes being on the lookout for little moments to bless someone. On that morning, my coworker saw an opportunity to care for someone else, and she went out of her way to do something small that had a very large impact.
