A Quiet Support
Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset.
Exodus 17:12
I once heard a keynote speaker share about not letting the green-eyed monster of jealousy steal what God has planned for your life. Her words forever altered how I view my role in God’s Kingdom and in his bigger plan.
She spoke of her own experience with jealousy and how God had called her to daily prayer for a woman she envied. Obediently, she began continually praying for blessing and favor over her perceived rival, and her envy faded as she realized that there is no need for competition in God’s Kingdom. She shared that we are each called to a unique journey, and the success of one does not require the defeat of another. Eventually, with her envy gone and a good dose of humility in its place, God began to use this speaker in ways that were beyond her wildest dreams.
Those words resonated deeply, and I’ve since found myself in the rare position of being the quiet prayer support for several women in ministry leadership positions. I’ve discovered that these women—all of them—periodically struggle. Their lives and their families are far from perfect, no matter how confident and put-together they appear to be. Having women who pray for them on a regular basis, who cheer them on without a glimmer of envy, is a blessing beyond imagination.
I love the story of Aaron and Hur holding up Moses’ arms so that the battle being waged by the Israelites would be won. While Moses was the one God selected, it was the quiet support from Aaron and Hur that gave Moses the strength he needed to follow through. Whenever I pray for the deeply personal needs of women who are leading amazing ministries, I cannot help but think of Aaron and Hur quietly standing beside and lifting up Moses. My hope is that these prayers support my friends the same way that Aaron and Hur’s physical assistance supported Moses’ arms and spirit.
