Safe In His Hand

From eternity to eternity I am God. No one can snatch anyone out of my hand. No one can undo what I have done.

One evening we were talking with our kids about life after death. Someone had just passed away in our community, and our children had questions. My husband and I answered them as well as we could and attempted to alleviate any fears.

As we talked, our eight-year-old daughter, Eleanor, began to cry.

“What’s wrong?” we asked, as my husband took her and held her on his lap.

“I don’t want to die!” she exclaimed, placing her head in her hands. “It sounds scary.”

My husband and I agreed. There is a part of the unknown that is troubling. But then I reminded her of the Scripture in Isaiah. “Honey, God promises that no one can be snatched out of his hand. That person is with Jesus, and that is always good.”

She nodded understanding as she wiped her eyes, and we hugged her close.

A week or so later, we discussed a family friend whose cousin had suddenly and tragically passed away. Without hesitation, Eleanor said, “But it’s okay, Mommy, they’re in God’s hand, right?”

“Right,” I responded, grateful that she remembered what we’d been talking about the week before.

Often if we do not know the character of God, we can question why bad things have to happen in life and what will become of us when we die. But when we know that God is good and kind and loving, we needn’t worry or fear. We can trust that even if we do not have all the answers, God will take care of us, and he is in control. He is God. For all of eternity. And no one can snatch us out of his hand. No one will be able to undo what he has done in life or death. And because of this truth, we do not need to fear what is to come.
