Instilled With Purpose

Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.

Rummaging through documents in my office, I ran across a file folder. Inside was a collection of emails, note cards, and other memorabilia from my years at a local newspaper.

As I rifled through the items, I smiled at the tangible reminders of working alongside supportive coworkers. Reading through an email congratulating me on successfully laying out the front page for the first time reminded me of a conversation I once had with my boss.

At the time, I was struggling to feel qualified in the design work I’d been tasked to accomplish each day. Repeatedly, I’d ask my boss what he thought of my designs.

Although he always provided helpful feedback, finally, he gently told me, “You’re doing fine. You need to trust yourself more.”

His confidence in me boosted my own belief in what I was capable of accomplishing. Though I still sought his opinion from time to time, it happened less and less. I had the knowledge and experience, but I lacked self-assurance. My boss’s wise words gave me the boost I needed to move forward.

In the same way, we are equipped to fulfill God’s purpose for our lives. It’s not that we have to do it all ourselves—he is not asking us to be superheroes—but rather that we can lean on him when we need to. God gave us the gifts and talents we possess. Instead of being paralyzed by self-doubt, let’s recognize that our abundant God can provide what we need to accomplish our purpose. His wisdom is ours for the asking. Let’s not belittle ourselves or envy someone else’s abilities. Let’s rejoice in the recognition that God will help us continue the good work, equipping us with resources and confident hope to accomplish the purpose he has instilled within us.
