Ripple Effects

I adore chunky handmade mugs in beautiful colors, the scent of lavender and mint emanating from my diffuser, hand embroidered dish towels, and elegant little mid-century coupe glasses. I also love the smell of the air just before it rains, jazz music from Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday, and the glittery sparkle of freshly fallen snow. And I can’t forget to add to my list the pearlized look of milk glass, a barefoot walk on a beach, and a cozy indoor fire on a stormy night.

Each one of those favorite things is simple but brings me joy. Choosing to see value in even the smallest beauties helps us see the world around us with fresh eyes. It fosters contentment and ultimately leads to being grateful for our senses, the loveliness of creation, and the delights of human ingenuity. Over time, my ability to notice and appreciate the little things spills over and makes me even more appreciative of greater things.

Matthew 13 includes seven parables of Jesus in which he compared everyday things—a farmer scattering seed, a fishing net, a mustard seed—to the Kingdom of Heaven. In one of his parables, Jesus talks about how even a little yeast will permeate the whole batch of dough in the bread-making process.

When you and I live in a way that demonstrates the love of Jesus, it spills over into those around us, changing our neighborhoods and communities. In the same way, when we choose to be grateful for the small things, that attitude of gratitude bubbles over and impacts others. Our decision to be thankful—no matter how simple the reason—changes us, first, then it ripples outward, changing the world around us too.
