Intuition

I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth.

It was a cold, wintry night, and I was returning home to my sister’s house after dark. It had started snowing, adding more accumulation to the already covered streets. I pulled up and parked across from my sister’s house, and as I exited my vehicle, an older gentleman pulled up and stopped, putting himself and his van between me and the house.

He leaned out his window and asked if I’d seen any kittens running in the street as he was looking for his. An odd request, I thought, since we were in a snowstorm, in the middle of winter. As he spoke, I heard a distinct voice in my head tell me not to move closer to talk to him but to back away from his vehicle and leave.

So instead of engaging him, I turned and hurried around his van, up and over the snowbanks, and into the safety of the house. As I slammed the door and locked it behind me, my dad, who had been babysitting my niece and nephew, asked what was wrong.

I told him about my interaction with the older gentleman.

“That doesn’t seem right,” he said. “I think you should call the police.”

At his urging, I did just that.

A kind woman took my call, but as I fumbled to explain what had happened, the fear began to dissipate. I suddenly felt sheepish, second-guessing myself and wondering if maybe I was overreacting.

I started to apologize, but the police officer stopped me. “Kendra, do not apologize. Nine times out of ten, people’s intuition is correct. I’m taking this seriously.”

Her words were a comfort, and to this day, I think about her comment.

What that police officer called intuition, as a Christian, I would call the Holy Spirit. We can sometimes forget that the Spirit of God is with us, but Scripture is clear; he is our Advocate, and he doesn’t leave us. I am grateful that if we stay attuned to him, he will lead us.
