Joining Her Cause

Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God.

“Cadbury eggs are expensive! And I need a lot of them this year,” I told my friend Myndee. It was a passing comment—not even a complaint—in a conversation about my Easter plans. I was telling her about how our family had hosted an Orphan Easter last year—a gathering at our home for those with nowhere to go for the holiday—and that we loved it so much that we were going to do it again this year.

Two days later, my phone pinged. “Are these the Cadbury eggs you were needing?” Myndee texted me, attaching a picture of the eggs in question, clearly snapped in the middle of a store aisle. She bought me the eggs and two gold-foiled chocolate bunnies to serve as the trophies for the Farkle tournament at our gathering.

My first instinct was to protest—I didn’t mean for her to buy the eggs, and it never occurred to me that she’d consider my passing comment, a small part of our evening of wonderful conversation, as a need she could fill. Pausing, I realized she was giving me a gift far greater than eggs and bunnies; she was giving me the precious gift of partnership.

We all want people to join our causes, but how often do we tangibly partner in our friend’s cause, with a joyful heart, before she has even asked? How often do we invest financially in the support of something close to her heart without the pitch ever being made?

The gift of eggs and bunnies reminded me that my friend sees me, hears me, and knows my heart in ways that go far beyond the monetary value of Easter candy. Her love for Jesus, for me, for the quiet ways Jesus is working is wrapped up in those eggs and bunnies, and it’s a gift I will treasure forever.
