Why Go To Church?

WHY GO TO CHURCH?

Read Psalm 66:4-13.

Antonio gazed at his friend Adam, not sure what to say. Adam had asked a simple question, but Antonio was stumped for an answer. “Why do I go to church?” he repeated.

“Yeah,” nodded Adam, sounding as though he really wanted to know.

“Because it’s Sunday,” Antonio said finally.

Adam looked at him. “That’s a stupid answer,” he said. “That’s like saying, ‘I go to school because it’s Monday or Friday.’”

Antonio thought about the question as he headed for home. Did he go to church just because his parents took him there? Was it because it was part of their family life? He talked with his father about it that evening.

“That’s a question you need to answer for yourself,” his father said. “I go to worship the Lord.”

“Can’t you worship Him someplace other than church?” Antonio asked.

Dad nodded. “Yes, you can worship the Lord anytime and anyplace. But if you don’t go to church, you’ll miss the fellowship you need to have with other Christians. The Bible tells us that we should gather together with others who believe like we do.”

Antonio thought about that. When the people of his church got together, it was a time to praise the Lord through singing and preaching. When the pastor preached from the Bible, Antonio always got something special from it—something he wouldn’t learn from the Bible by himself. “I’m going to talk with Adam again,” he called to his parents. “I think I can give him a better answer now.”

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you attend church just out of habit? It’s a good habit to have, but you should also go to worship the Lord, to sing praises to Him, to hear His Word, and to fellowship with other Christians.

TO MEMORIZE:

I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the LORD.”
