Spice In Your Life
SPICE IN YOUR LIFE
Read Ephesians 5:18-20.
Jenna piled her taco shell with the things her father had prepared—meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and his own special taco sauce. Between bites Jenna said, “This sauce is different from what you get in a restaurant. What makes it different?”
“Well, Jenna, I double the amount of ground cumin in my sauce,” said Dad with a smile. “The cumin gives Mexican foods their special flavor.”
The memory of that supper stayed with Jenna. One day she saw the bottle of ground cumin in the spice drawer. She opened the bottle, shook a little of the powder into her hand, and licked it. “Oh, yuck!” she gasped, nearly choking. She ran to the sink and rinsed her mouth with water three times.
When Jenna told her father what had happened, she asked, “Why doesn’t that spice taste good? It sure makes the tacos good.”
“I think this is an example of having too much of a good thing,” said Dad, laughing. “Have you ever heard people refer to something as the ‘spice of life,’ Jenna? They’re usually talking about one of the fun things they enjoy—vacations, holidays, and so on. Sometimes we think we’d like those things all the time. But if we did, soon they would mean nothing. It would be like having too much of a good spice. The hard times God allows to come our way are needed too. They help us enjoy the good times.”
“Hmmmm,” said Jenna with a smile. “Whoever thought life as a Christian would be like eating tacos?”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you think it would be nice to play all the time and never work? Just as there are many kinds of spices that lend their special touch to foods, God sends you many kinds of experiences to make your life special. He knows just what you need to help you live life at its best.
TO MEMORIZE:
Give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
