What A Mess
WHAT A MESS
Read Psalm 25:4-10.
“I don’t know how I’m going to get everything done today,” Mom said at the breakfast table. “I have several errands to run this morning, and somehow I’ll have to find time to bake a birthday cake for Thomas.”
“I can make Thomas’s cake!” said Julie. “You’ve told me before that it’s easy. Besides, Thomas is only two, and he’ll eat anything!”
“Well, okay,” agreed Mom hesitantly. “The mix and the frosting are in the cupboard. Be sure to read the directions.” Julie started the cake soon after Mom left. She read the directions and was about to pour the mix into the bowl when the phone rang. It was her friend Stephanie.
After Julie hung up the phone, she went about making her cake, remembering what she had read earlier. At least, she thought she remembered. But when the cake was done, it didn’t look quite right. When it cooled, she frosted it carefully, but it was no use. The cake was dry, and Thomas, who was known to eat many strange things, wouldn’t touch it.
“What a mess!” Mom exclaimed. “Didn’t you follow the directions?”
“I read them, but then Stephanie called, and I didn’t look at them again,” explained Julie. “I thought I was doing it the right way.”
“That’s the way many people live their lives,” observed Dad. “They hear a sermon or read the Bible occasionally, and then they think they know all they need to know. But they forget what they heard. God gives directions, but some people ignore them, and their lives turn into big messes—just like that cake! Paying attention to directions is an important principle to learn.”
