Heart, Not Hair
HEART, NOT HAIR
Read 1 Samuel 16:1, 3-7.
Christy was excited about the birthday present Aunt Peggy had sent. It was a salon gift certificate so Christy could have her hair cut and colored. It sounded like fun. But that was before Christy knew what the outcome would be!
“Mom, I can’t go to school like this!” she wailed after getting her hair dyed. “All the kids will laugh at me!”
“Why should they laugh at you?” teased Christy’s brother Joe. “You do look a little funny with black hair, but other than that, you look okay.”
“Mom,” Christy wailed again.
“That’s enough, Joe,” said Mom. “Christy feels bad enough without you kidding her. Actually, Christy, your hair looks nice. You just aren’t used to the color yet.”
Christy looked in the mirror and scowled. She knew her mother would make her go to school tomorrow, and it was just too horrible to think about.
Mom looked at the grouchy expression on Christy’s face. “Honey, remember that the Lord said it’s not the outward appearance that counts, but what is on the inside. The fanciest hairstyle in the world isn’t going to make up for a bad attitude and a grumpy look. On the other hand, if you’ll be as kind and cheerful as you usually are, your hair will not be important.”
Christy knew it was true. Her heart, not her hair, was what mattered. She would ask the Lord to help her give more attention to her inside appearance than to her outside appearance!
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you care more about the latest hairstyles and fashions than you do about your inner beauty? Yes, it is important to be neat and clean and attractive, but God is more concerned about your heart than He is about your curly hair or new shirt!
TO MEMORIZE:
People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.
