Unused Light
UNUSED LIGHT
Read Psalm 119:97-105.
It had been a busy day for Daniel, who was on a camping trip with his uncle Bob and cousin Eric. As the sun went down, two tired boys stretched out beside the campfire. “That was the best fish I ever ate,” declared Daniel.
Uncle Bob nodded. “Now let’s have some spiritual food before we turn in for the night,” he said. “I hope you boys remembered your Bibles.”
Eric nodded, but Daniel shook his head. “I don’t need it,” he said.
Uncle Bob raised his eyebrows. “The Word of God is a very important part of my life,” he told Daniel. “Listen to what God says about it—He calls it a light.” Uncle Bob turned to Psalm 119. The boys listened quietly as he read several verses and then prayed.
As the boys were unrolling their sleeping bags later, Daniel groaned. “The mosquitoes are terrible! Where’s the bug spray?”
“It’s in the car,” said Uncle Bob. He picked up the flashlight. “I’ll get it.”
“Let’s go with him, Daniel,” suggested Eric. “Maybe we’ll see a bear!”
As they headed into the darkness, Daniel stumbled over a log. Then he saw Uncle Bob bump into a branch. “Why don’t you turn on the flashlight, Uncle Bob?” he asked. “I can’t see where I’m going.”
“Flashlights are okay,” Uncle Bob replied, “but I don’t think I need one.”
Daniel chuckled. “Okay, Uncle Bob, I get the point—we need light in the dark, and we need the Bible to give us light in our lives. Now, would you please turn on that flashlight?”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
It’s foolish to stumble along and not use the light that’s available, isn’t it? Only the light of God’s Word will keep you from stumbling into sin. Are you using it?
