Always Tuned In

ALWAYS TUNED IN

Read Psalm 86:1-7.

David looked at all the people lying on the beach and swimming in the ocean. He squinted in the sunlight to see people bobbing up and down in the water. Everyone was making noise—laughing, talking, shouting, or singing.

Suddenly a lifeguard jumped into the water. With quick strokes, he swam out into the deep water. In a few minutes a crowd gathered and watched as he rescued a drowning girl.

David asked later, “Dad, how did the lifeguard know that girl was drowning? I was standing right here. But there was so much noise all around me, I didn’t hear her call for help.”

“That’s because your ears and eyes weren’t tuned to hear or see that she was drowning,” David’s father replied. “Lifeguards have to take a lifesaving course,” he explained. “They learn that when they are on duty, they must keep very alert. They must be able to see right away if someone is in trouble. And they must listen carefully so they hear a person’s call for help.”

David asked, “Isn’t there a Bible verse that says God always hears us when we call?”

“Yes,” replied Dad. “Throughout the psalms we learn that God hears and answers when we call to Him in prayer.”

David looked up some of those verses. He was glad that God is always tuned in and ready to hear him.
