The Umbrella
THE UMBRELLA
Read Psalm 19:7-11.
“Mommy, I want that ’brella,” pleaded little Ashley, pointing to a brightly colored umbrella on display in the children’s department.
Mom said, “I was just thinking it would be a good idea for you to have your own umbrella.” So Mom bought it and showed Ashley how to carry it over her wrist when it wasn’t raining.
The next day, to Ashley’s delight, it rained. “Can I go outdoors with my ’brella?” she asked.
“All right,” Mom agreed. “Just for a while.”
A minute later Ashley hurried up the front walk, her new umbrella swinging on her arm while the rain pelted down on her head. Mom hurried to the door. “My ’brella doesn’t work,” complained Ashley. “I’m all wet!”
“The umbrella works all right,” Mom replied. “But you have to open it and hold it over your head.” She helped Ashley change into dry clothes and then let her go out once more, this time with the umbrella opened and held high. That evening the rest of the family laughed when they heard the story, but Ashley pouted.
“It’s okay, sweetheart,” Dad told her, reaching for the Bible he used in family devotions. “Sometimes we all act like you did.”
Ashley’s face brightened. “You do?”
“Yep,” said Dad. “You left your umbrella closed, and sometimes we leave the Bible closed. God’s Word teaches us about Him and keeps us from sin. Just as you needed to open your umbrella to get any use from it, we need to open our Bibles. Let’s do that right now.”
