The Right Sounds
THE RIGHT SOUNDS
Read Psalm 119:9-16.
As Jeff turned the dial of his new radio, he counted the stations it could pick up. “Dad, how can I pick up so many stations?” Jeff asked. “I counted thirty.”
“Sound waves from all those stations are right here in this room. Your radio is a ‘receiver,’ so it picks out the various sound waves and makes it possible for you to hear them.”
“The man who invented the radio must have been pretty smart,” Jeff said.
“Yes,” agreed Dad, “but you know, the One who made your ear to hear the sounds is even smarter.”
“You mean God, don’t you, Dad?” Jeff asked.
“That’s right,” said Dad. “Your ear can pick up the softest voice, but it can handle very loud noises as well. In a noisy room your ear can pick out a certain voice you want to hear while tuning out other noises. And since you have two ears, you can tell what direction a sound is coming from and also about how far away it is!”
“So the ear is like a radio,” said Jeff. “They both receive sound waves.”
Dad nodded. “And even as your radio can be tuned to receive all kinds of sounds from different stations, so your ears can receive all sorts of different sounds. Do you always treat your ears to the right kind of sounds?”
Jeff looked down, remembering jokes he had listened to with his friends.
“Jeff,” continued Dad, “be careful not to drown out God’s voice with the sounds of the world.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Are you using your ears to listen to the right kinds of things? Does the music you choose honor God? Do the jokes, stories, and programs you listen to please Him? Thank God for your hearing, and promise Him you’ll use your ears to listen to good things!
