The Right Key

THE RIGHT KEY

Read John 3:14-18.

“Josh, would you open the trunk, please?” asked Mom. She pulled the keys from the ignition and kept one, handing the others to him.

Josh grabbed the ring and ran around to the trunk, eagerly shoving in a key. The lock wouldn’t budge. He fumbled with the jangling ring and selected another key. It wouldn’t even go in. Frustrated, he yelled, “Mom! Which one?”

Mom took the key ring from him. “It was the one I was holding,” she said. “You bolted out of the car before I could tell you.” She held out a short silver key.

Sheepishly, Josh slid the key in and unlocked the trunk. He returned the ring with a grin. “I guess there’s only one that will work, huh?”

Mom smiled as she gave him a grocery bag. “Yes, and do you know what? There are still many people who don’t use the right key.”

“What do you mean?” Josh asked.

“God gave His Son, Jesus, so that we may have eternal life. But instead of using that key to salvation, many people try their own way, even if they have heard of the right way.” She turned to Josh and dangled the key ring in front of him. “Do you remember how you felt when you tried to use the wrong ones?”

Josh nodded. “I thought for sure they’d work. They all looked like they would.”

“Other people think the same thing about heaven,” said Mom. “They try different keys, like going to church or trying to be good. But Jesus is the only way to heaven.”

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you trying to get to heaven by being good, going to church, or giving money? Those are things God wants you to do, but they can’t save you. You can enter heaven only through Christ.

TO MEMORIZE:

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
