The Right Equipment
THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT
Read 2 Timothy 3:14-17.
“Where’s your Bible, Jeff?” asked Jenny as they climbed into the car one Sunday morning.
“I dunno,” mumbled Jeff. “I can’t find it.”
“How about your memory verse?” continued Jenny. “Do you know it?”
“Nah.” Jeff shook his head. “I was too busy this week.”
“That’s enough,” said Dad sternly as Jenny started to speak again. He looked at Jeff. “I’m afraid you have been neglecting important things lately, Son.” Jeff just shrugged.
The next evening, Jeff and his dad decided to play a round of golf. Dad had just started backing out of the driveway when Jeff noticed the golf bag standing at the side of the garage door. “Hold it!” called Jeff, and Dad stopped the car. “You forgot your golfing equipment!” Jeff said with a laugh. He jumped out and ran to get the golf bag.
“Thanks,” said Dad as Jeff put the bag in the back seat. “It sure would be easier not to carry all that stuff along, but it would be pretty hard to play golf without it.”
“Yeah,” said Jeff with a grin. “You gotta be properly equipped.”
“That’s true.” Dad glanced at Jeff. “Did you know that you have to be properly equipped to be a good servant for the Lord, too? That’s one reason why it’s important to read the Bible and memorize verses and pray. It helps equip you to serve God.”
“Well,” murmured Jeff weakly, “I . . . I guess so.”
“I’m not properly equipped for the game of golf without my clubs and golf balls. And we’re not properly equipped to serve God without a knowledge of His Word.” Dad grinned at Jeff. “Tell you what,” said Dad. “Take your Sunday school book along, and we’ll both learn your memory verse while we drive to the golf course. Okay?” Jeff nodded and ran into the house for his book.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Are you properly equipped as a Christian? Do you read and memorize God’s Word so you can share His love with others? Don’t try to play the game—to live a Christian life—without the right equipment.
