Read And Obey

READ AND OBEY

Read 2 Timothy 3:14-17.

Kelsey slipped quietly through the kitchen, hoping to avoid her mom. She hung her jacket in the closet and tried to sneak to her bedroom, but Mom appeared in the doorway. “Hi, honey,” Mom greeted cheerfully. “How did you do on that math test?”

“Not so hot,” Kelsey answered. “And I studied hard.” She handed the test to her mother.

“You didn’t follow directions,” Mom said. “When will you learn to read directions first?”

“I don’t know,” Kelsey mumbled.

“Yesterday you tried to make cupcakes without following the recipe. What happened?”

“I blew it,” admitted Kelsey, head down.

“And what about the time I told you how to do the laundry, but you didn’t follow directions?”

Kelsey giggled this time. “Dad ended up with pink underwear.”

Mom smiled too, but only briefly. “Kelsey, failure to follow directions could harm you—both physically and spiritually.”

“What do you mean?” Kelsey asked.

“God’s Word is full of instructions for us. When we neglect to follow those instructions, we cause ourselves a lot of grief,” Mom explained.

“Or sometimes we don’t even bother to read the instructions at all,” Kelsey added.

“Right,” Mom agreed, “and unless we read them—on math tests or in the Bible—we can’t possibly obey them.”

“Mom, I’m going to make a real effort to do better from now on. I don’t want to fail any more tests!” Kelsey said with determination.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

When was the last time you read God’s Word? The Bible contains many specific directions and many principles to follow. Read it and follow the instructions God gives.

TO MEMORIZE:

All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.
