Psalm Reader
PSALM READER
Read Matthew 6:26-34.
“Where are we going, Dad?” asked Kevin.
“Wait and see,” Dad said with a wink.
“Madame Margarite, Spiritualist, Palm Reader,” Sarah read as they drove past a sign on Main Street. “Have Your Fortune Told Here.”
“I’d like to know the future,” Laura said. “Will Brad ask me to the party?”
“How much does it cost to have your fortune told, Dad?” Kevin asked.
“I don’t know,” Dad answered, “and I will never find out. God’s Word warns against going to fortune-tellers.”
“Why?” Sarah, Laura, and Kevin spoke in unison.
“It would be fun to know the future,” Kevin argued.
“Suppose we had known last Christmas that Grandma Snider was going to have a stroke the next week. Would we have enjoyed Christmas?” Dad asked.
“No, I guess not,” answered Laura.
“And fortune-tellers aren’t always right. One young man was told that he would inherit a lot of money,” Dad said. “He began buying expensive things on his credit cards. At the end of the year, instead of inheriting a lot of money, he was deeply in debt! People who base their lives on false predictions are living dangerously,” Dad warned.
Laura said, “I learned a psalm that said going to a fortune-teller is ‘following the advice of the wicked.’”
The kids cheered as Dad drove into the parking lot of a new ice cream shop. “The future is God’s secret. He wants us to trust Him, just as you trusted me today. God wisely hides sorrows from us, and He provides many surprises.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you worry about the future? Worry is a sin because it means you are not trusting God. When you are tempted to worry, remember that God loves you and He has everything under control.
