Peas Or Peelings
PEAS OR PEELINGS
Read Psalm 23:1-4.
It was lunch time, and Karen watched as her little brother, Isaac, sat stubbornly shaking his head, refusing to eat the strained peas Mom was offering.
“Maybe you should give him applesauce,” suggested Karen. “He likes that.”
“Yes, he can have some,” responded Mom. “But he also has to learn to eat other foods that he needs.” Mom took Isaac out of his chair and set him on the floor. “We’ll try feeding him again in a few minutes.”
A short time later, Karen heard a rustling noise coming from behind the kitchen door. There was Isaac, rummaging in the trash bag. “Oh, Mom!” said Karen.
Their mother rushed to the rescue, but Isaac cried when she took a banana peel out of his mouth.
“Wasn’t that silly, Mom?” asked Karen, turning on the TV to see what was on. “Isaac sure doesn’t know what’s good for him, does he?”
“No,” Mom replied, “he doesn’t.” She paused, then added, “Very often Christians don’t either. We pay no attention to the gifts God provides for us to help us be joyful and grow to be like Him. Instead we try to fill our needs with things from this world that aren’t important or necessary or even good for us. Those things are ‘garbage’ compared with the things of the Lord. They are peelings, not peas.”
Karen agreed with her mother, turning off the TV. “I think I’ll go do my Sunday school lesson.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you have a need in your life? A need for fellowship? For spiritual growth? For emotional fulfillment? For a sense of achievement? The things of this world will never satisfy those needs. Let God do it. Whatever your need, give God the chance to satisfy it.
TO MEMORIZE:
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
GOD MEETS NEEDS.
