Part Of The Furniture
PART OF THE FURNITURE
Read Psalm 19:12-14.
“I am not a slob!” Becky shouted at her brother, Talbot.
“Yes, you are,” replied Talbot. “Everywhere you go, you leave things messy!”
Just then Mom walked in. “Now, Talbot, let’s not be name-calling!” she said. Then she added, “I’ll admit, Becky, your housekeeping habits do leave something to be desired. Have you looked at your room lately?”
“Of course I’ve looked at it, I sleep there,” said Becky with a pout. “Sure, it’s a little messy, but it’s not that terrible. You two just like to pick on me.” With that, she stormed into her bedroom and slammed the door.
Why did Talbot call me a slob? she thought. I can keep things neat when I want to! Suddenly she stopped and looked closely around her room. Half-done homework papers lay scattered across the floor. Clothes—both clean and dirty—were piled in one corner. Crumbs covered the carpet, and her bedspread was all wadded up.
Then Becky laughed out loud. On her desk she saw a plate with a dried-out bologna sandwich! I must have brought that in here last week when I was studying and forgot about it, Becky thought. It was there so long that I didn’t even notice it anymore—it was just like part of the furniture. She threw the plate into the trash and started to pick up some papers. It was time to do some cleaning.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Have you taken a good look at yourself lately? Sometimes lives, as well as rooms, need cleaning. Perhaps there are some sins in your life that have been there so long you’ve gotten used to them. They’ve become part of the furniture. You may need to ask someone else to point out the messy spots. Do some housecleaning today.
TO MEMORIZE:
How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults.
Psalm 19:12
