More Than Sand
MORE THAN SAND
Read Psalm 40:5; 139:14-18.
“Nine, ten, eleven,” Julie painstakingly separated tiny pieces of sand from the pile she held in her hand and dropped them, grain by grain, into her pail.
“Are you just going to sit on this beach blanket, trying to count sand?” asked her brother, Rick.
“There must be more sand than anything else in the whole world,” Julie exclaimed, ignoring her brother. Rick rolled his eyes and headed toward the water.
Julie stayed on the blanket, counting sand. After a little while her father looked up from the book he was reading. “How’s the counting? Do you think you’ll be able to finish the whole beach this afternoon?” he teased.
Julie sprinkled the remaining sand she held over her feet. “I give up,” she said. “I can’t even count one handful. How much sand is there, Dad?”
Dad laughed. “There is no way we could begin to count all the sand in the world,” he said. “Isn’t that wonderful?”
Julie was puzzled. “Wonderful?” she asked. “Why is that wonderful?”
Dad reached into the tote bag packed with books, towels, and lotion. He took out a small Bible and turned to Psalm 139. “It says here that God’s thoughts concerning us outnumber the grains of sand,” he said. “Just think of that!”
Julie filled her bucket to the top with sand. Then she tipped it over and watched the millions of grains pour out. “Yes,” she agreed. “It is wonderful.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do other kids sometimes say things that leave you feeling worthless? God made each person special. The next time you feel less than special, think about all the sand there is. Then thank God that you are so special to Him that His thoughts about you are far more than all the grains of sand in the world.
