Keep The Light On

KEEP THE LIGHT ON

Read Psalm 119:97-105.

“Son, come here, please,” Mom called from Patrick’s room.

“What is it, Mom?” Patrick asked.

“This.” Mom was holding up Patrick’s Bible. “It’s all covered with dust.”

“Sorry, Mom,” said Patrick. “I keep forgetting to dust that shelf by the bed.”

“That’s not what I meant,” explained Mom. “When was the last time you read your Bible?”

Patrick shrugged. “Since we go to church on Sundays—twice—I figure I hear enough from the Bible there to last me through the week.”

At bedtime Mom followed Patrick to his room, switched on the light, and then turned it off again. “Mom!” exclaimed Patrick. “I can’t see!”

“But the light was on for a minute,” said Mom. “Can’t you remember where things are? Can’t you make do with the light you got then?”

“Don’t be silly,” grumbled Patrick as he turned the light back on. “Once it’s off, it doesn’t do anything for me. So don’t turn it off, okay?”

“But Patrick,” said Mom, “isn’t that what you’ve been trying to do with God? You told me that by going to church twice on Sundays, you learn enough about God to be able to skip reading your Bible during the week. But it doesn’t work that way. You need to read God’s Word every day in order to grow as a Christian.”

“By not reading my Bible, I turn off the light on myself, huh?” asked Patrick. “Well, can I leave my light on awhile longer tonight? I want to read my Bible and ‘turn on’ my other ‘light.’”

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Do you think that by going to church you can get through the rest of the week without bothering with daily devotions? That isn’t true. Every day you need to turn on the light of God’s Word for spiritual direction.

TO MEMORIZE:

The teaching of your word gives light, so even the simple can understand.
