Just Outside Jill’s Window
JUST OUTSIDE JILL’S WINDOW
Read Psalm 91:1-2, 4-5, 9-12, 14.
The Marris family lived in a two-story house surrounded by big trees. Jill especially liked the maple tree outside her bedroom window. She enjoyed the sound of the leaves gently brushing against the glass.
One spring day Jill looked out the window and noticed a wren surveying the crook of a branch. Soon a second wren flew up. Jill stood still so she wouldn’t frighten the birds. As she watched, they began to build a nest. The wrens made many trips, gathering twigs and bits of leaves. Jill had to laugh when she saw one of the wrens use a piece of hair ribbon that she had lost in the snow during the winter.
When the nest was finished, Jill checked each day to see if there was anything in it. One morning she saw small eggs in the straw. Soon there were baby wrens too. The parents kept busy feeding the babies!
But one day there was a terrible thunderstorm. The branch swayed back and forth, and the nest swayed with it.
“How are the wrens, Jill?” asked Dad, as he was passing her room.
“The branch is swaying in the wind, but the mother wren is covering the babies,” Jill answered. “It’s great that God created her so she knows how to protect her babies.”
“I’ll tell you another great thing,” said Dad, coming in to take a look. “God uses that very picture—a mother bird spreading her wings to protect the babies—as an example of how He cares for us, His children.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Have you ever seen a mother bird protect her young? The Bible often uses “word pictures” to illustrate God’s love. Remember a mother bird’s care for her babies, and you’ll know how carefully God protects you.
TO MEMORIZE:
He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
