Ice, Water, And Steam
ICE, WATER, AND STEAM
Read 1 John 5:5-8.
“This is the life,” said Samuel as he sat with his back propped against an old log. He and his cousin, Shawn, were spending the day in a state park with their grandfather.
“I feel close to God out here,” said Grandpa.
Shawn nodded. He said, “Our youth leader told us God is one God but three persons. There is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. That’s hard to understand.”
“I don’t understand it either,” said Samuel. “But I’m hungry—let’s start lunch, Grandpa. Should we get water from the spring?”
Grandpa walked over to the ice chest. “Let’s use some ice for cooking water,” he said, dropping several ice cubes into a pan that he set on a rack over the campfire. “I think it might help us understand something.” The boys watched as the ice began melting into water. Soon the water was steaming.
“Did you notice that first there was ice, then it melted into water, and then some of that water turned into steam?” asked Grandpa. “It’s the same substance, but in three different forms.”
Shawn looked at Grandpa. “That’s a little like God, right? He’s one God, but he has three different forms.”
Grandpa nodded. “Of course, God is much greater than water. After all, He made water! But seeing water in these three forms can help us understand God in three persons.”
The boys agreed. “It’s good to think about God and His greatness,” added Samuel. He grinned. “And now I’d like to change some food to a different form. I’m still hungry!”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you find the Trinity hard to understand? God does not ask you to understand it perfectly. Just remember that we serve one God, not three—but He does have three forms. Give thanks for our great Creator God.
TO MEMORIZE:
So we have these three witnesses—the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and all three agree.
