DEBBY’S DIARY
Read 2 Peter 3:13-15, 18.
Debby and her mother were cleaning the attic when Debby found a small book with a key. “Look! My old diary!” she exclaimed. “I started writing in this when I was five.” She pointed to the large, crooked letters on one page. “I can hardly read it,” she said with a laugh.
Her mother smiled. “Your writing improved through the years, though.”
“Yeah, it keeps getting better,” agreed Debby. “Look at this page. I wrote this two years ago, when I was nine. This writing looks almost like the way I write now.”
“Yes, it does,” said Mother, and your spelling hasn’t changed much either. You still spell friend ‘f-r-e-i-n-d,’ the way it is here.”
Debby blushed. “I always did have trouble with that word.”
Mom grew thoughtful. “Sometimes our learning seems to stop—even our learning about how to live as Christians,” she said. “When I first asked Jesus to be my Savior, I was always learning new things from God’s Word. But the changes and improvements started coming more slowly after a while. I wonder if I’m any more like Jesus now than I was five years ago.”
“I asked Jesus to be my Savior just three years ago,” Debby said, “but I know what you mean, Mom. What do you think happens?”
“It’s easy to get lazy,” said Mom. “I’m going to confess that to the Lord and ask Him to help me start learning to be more like Him.”
“Me, too!” Debby agreed. “Let’s start today.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Have you accepted Jesus as your Savior? If so, think back to that time. Were you more enthusiastic and committed to Him then than you are now? Ask Him to renew your devotion to Him. Until you reach heaven, there will always be room for improvement.

Look how far you have fallen! Turn back to me and do the works you did at first.
