God’s Handiwork

GOD’S HANDIWORK

Read Genesis 1:26-27.

“Just look at Kellie’s hair,” Emily whispered to Amy. “It must have been made with straw from Mr. Brown’s barn.” The girls quieted down as their Sunday school teacher entered the room.

“I’m happy to see each of you today,” said Ms. Ruth. “I’m especially glad you’re back, Kellie.” Then Ms. Ruth told the class, “We’re going to draw numbers and divide into teams to make a mural of the story of the Prodigal Son.”

Each girl chose a slip of paper. Emily drew a six, and so did Kellie. “Anyone want to trade?” asked Emily. When Ms. Ruth looked shocked, Emily mumbled, “Never mind.” She told Kellie, “You draw the pigpen. I’ll draw the Prodigal Son.” Emily soon saw that Kellie was a very good artist, but she didn’t tell her so.

“Boy, that’s a good drawing,” said Stacy, pointing to the pigpen. Then she giggled. “Is that a two-legged pig or a four-legged man in the middle?” Everyone laughed. Emily felt like she’d been hit in the stomach.

When the dismissal bell rang, Emily ran to the door, but Ms. Ruth called her back and put her arm around the girl’s shoulders. “It hurt you when the girls laughed at your picture, didn’t it?”

Emily sniffed. “That was mean,” she said.

“Yes,” Ms. Ruth agreed. “Now think about how God must feel when we make fun of Him. You created the picture, so it hurt you when the girls laughed at it. God created Kellie, so it hurts Him when you laugh at her. He knows it hurts her, too.”

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you guilty of making fun of God’s creation? Not only do you hurt others when you laugh at them, but you laugh at their Creator. God made people in His image. You wouldn’t laugh at God, would you?

TO MEMORIZE:

Those who mock the poor insult their Maker; those who rejoice at the misfortune of others will be punished.
