Deadly Flea Bite

DEADLY FLEA BITE

Read 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.

A blast of music hit Mom’s ears as she entered the house. “Chan, turn that off!” she called. Click.

Chan’s lip curled. “Can’t Christians enjoy life?”

“You know they can,” Mom replied, “but you enjoy the wrong things.”

Chan shook his head. “You’ll never understand. You belong to a different generation.”

The telephone interrupted him, and Mom went to answer it. “Hello. How are you, Lei? Jian is in the hospital?” Chan listened. “Bubonic plague? Are they sure? I thought bubonic plague was wiped out years ago. Certainly we’ll pray for him. As soon as Tom gets home, we’ll meet you at the hospital. Tell Jian we’re praying for him, okay? Good-bye.”

“What’s bubonic plague?” Chan asked.

Mom collapsed into a chair. “It’s a terrible disease. In the Middle Ages it was called the Black Death, and it killed thousands. The doctor told Aunt Lei there have been a few cases in the States the last few years.”

“What causes it?” Chan asked.

“Fleas from infected rats are the carriers,” Mom answered grimly.

“Fleas?” Chan was astounded. “Little bitty fleas?”

“Little things can be deadly,” Mom told him. “They can be just as dangerous as big things—sometimes more so because we tend to overlook them.” She paused and looked directly at him. “And little sins can cause spiritual epidemics.”

Chan took a deep breath. “Little things like music with hateful words?” Mom nodded. “You might be right,” Chan admitted.

HOW ABOUT YOU?

TO MEMORIZE:

Because we have these promises, dear friends, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that can defile our body or spirit. And let us work toward complete holiness because we fear God.
