Dad’s Job
DAD’S JOB
Read Numbers 21:4-6.
“I sure wish Dad could come to my basketball game tonight,” complained Brock to his older brother, Tyler. “He works every Friday night!”
Tyler tried to cheer him up. “Mom and I have been there, Brock.”
“But it’s not the same,” Brock replied. Just then Mom called them to supper.
“Mmmmm, this steak is tasty!” exclaimed Tyler. “Remember how often we wished for a steak when Dad was out of work?”
“I sure do,” replied Mom, “and now I need to remember that no work means no gravy.” She glanced at Brock, but he refused to smile.
The next evening the family enjoyed having Dad at home. “Tyler, did you choose something for family devotions tonight?” he asked.
Tyler replied, “I’ve got it all planned, Dad.” Tyler took the Bible and read from Exodus and Numbers. Then he said, “Today is an anniversary. Anybody know what for?”
“I do,” responded Dad. “It’s three months since I got called back to work.”
“That’s right!” said Mom. “I remember how thrilled we were.” She paused, then exclaimed, “Oh, I see your point, Tyler! We’ve been like the Israelites. At first they were thrilled to have manna, but then they began to complain about it. I confess that I was the first to complain about your dad’s job. I hope you’ll all forgive me. May God forgive us too! Thank you for teaching us a lesson, Tyler.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Is there some blessing in your life that you’ve begun to dislike? Perhaps you prayed for a brother or sister, but now that you have one you sometimes wish you didn’t. Or maybe you prayed that your Sunday school class would grow, and now that it has, you don’t like it, because there are too many new kids. Be careful. Never criticize God’s blessings.
