A Mighty Weapon

A MIGHTY WEAPON

Read Psalm 119:97-104.

Ruben and Ruby Marie went to visit Grandpa, who was known for quoting Scripture. “How do you remember so much?” Ruben asked. “Ruby Marie and I learn a lot of verses for Bible club, but it’s hard to remember them all.”

Grandpa smiled. “Do you know your phone number?” he asked. “And what about your locker combination or your address?”

Ruben said, “Sure! They’re easy ’cuz I use them a lot.”

“Well,” replied Grandpa, “it’s like that with the Word of God. We remember what’s important to us—and what we use a lot.” He sniffed the air. “Hey,” he continued, “if my sniffer is still working, I smell fresh bread!”

Ruby Marie nodded. “Mama sent this loaf.”

“That was kind of her,” said Grandpa. He set the bread on the table, next to the lamp. “It looks good there, don’t you think?” he asked.

“But Grandpa,” said Ruben, “if you just let it sit there, it won’t do you any good.”

“What should I do with it?” Grandpa asked.

“Why, eat it, of course,” Ruby Marie replied.

Grandpa smiled. “You’re right! We need bread each day for our bodies, and we need the Word of God each day for our souls. Bread doesn’t do any good on the table, and God’s Word doesn’t do any good on the bookshelf! We need to taste it by reading it and digest it by memorizing it. We need to get it into our hearts so it can work in our lives.” He picked up the loaf. “I’m going to enjoy this bread, and I hope you keep on learning your verses.”

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Where is your spiritual “bread”? Are you letting it just lie on the table, or are you “eating” it?

TO MEMORIZE:

People do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.
