A Good, Good Samaritan
A GOOD, GOOD SAMARITAN
Read Luke 10:30-37.
Maryann was feeling uncomfortable. Last week at Sunday school someone had suggested they organize a “Good Samaritan Club.” To become a member, a person had to do something special for someone else. Now it was report time, but Maryann had no report.
James was the first to tell what he had done. “On my way home from school an old man was trying to shovel snow. I did it for him.”
Then it was Chandra’s turn. “Our neighbor is in the hospital. She doesn’t have any relatives in this area, so I went to visit her.”
Mrs. Peters nodded at both James and Chandra. “I would say they deserve to become members of the Good Samaritan Club, wouldn’t you?” Everyone agreed.
“Maryann, do you have a report?” Mrs. Peters asked.
Maryann shook her head. “I couldn’t go anyplace. My mother was sick in bed all week.”
Mrs. Peters said, “Oh, I’m so sorry. Who took care of your brother and made meals?”
“I did,” Maryann said. “I just made sandwiches and salads and things like that.”
Mrs. Peters asked, “Did you stack the dishes?”
“Oh, no,” Maryann replied. “I put them in the dishwasher. It didn’t take long.”
Mrs. Peters looked around. “All in favor of making Maryann a member of the Good Samaritan Club, raise your hand.” Each one raised his or her hand. “The things you did, Maryann, were every bit as important as those done by the others,” added Mrs. Peters. “You helped in the hardest place of all—home.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Is it more fun to help a neighbor or a friend than to help at home? Both kinds of help are needed. Think of ways you can be a good Samaritan at home. There are many ways to help. Will you do it?
TO MEMORIZE:
I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!
