A Few Gray Hairs
A FEW GRAY HAIRS
Read Titus 2:1-7.
Danny dragged his feet as he approached Mr. Grant, the man in the wheelchair. He was visiting the old man as a “Christian work assignment” for his youth group. “Uh, I’m Danny Harper from church,” he managed to say.
Mr. Grant invited the boy to sit beside him. Then the old man began telling how he had helped start the church Danny now attended. “That was in the old days when I was a new Christian,” said Mr. Grant. “I went door to door, inviting people to come to our new church. I had so much energy then! Oh, to be young again! That’s when a person can really serve the Lord.”
Danny laughed. He said, “And I’ve always thought that a kid like me can’t do much for Jesus. I keep thinking that when I’m older, I’ll really start working for the Lord.”
Mr. Grant shook his finger in Danny’s face. “Don’t think that way,” he said. “Young people can do much for the Lord. They’re so fresh and excited about life! Already you’ve helped me realize that I ought to start serving God again like I used to. But I’ll have to work pretty hard to keep up with a young whippersnapper like you!”
“Thanks, Mr. Grant!” said Danny. “You’ve helped me, too. Next time I won’t be so afraid to visit someone just because he’s got a few gray hairs!”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
When was the last time you made friends with someone much older than yourself? You may feel that older people look down on you because of your youth. But actually you can do much for them by visiting and by helping with shopping or yard work.
TO MEMORIZE:
Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.
1 Timothy 4:12, NIV
