A Better Offer
A BETTER OFFER
Read Matthew 19:27-30.
Jana plopped down on the couch. “I don’t think Sara will ever become a Christian. I’ve witnessed to her lots of times, but it doesn’t do any good. She just keeps on going to raunchy movies and watching those television shows you won’t let me watch. I’ve told her what I think about all that, but she just laughs.”
“She’ll do those things until she has the Lord’s power to overcome sin,” Mom reasoned.
“But she doesn’t want to overcome sin,” Jana said as she shook her head. “She enjoys it.”
Mom nodded. “That’s natural. There are temporary pleasures in sin, but living for God is much bett—”
“Big Paw! Come back with that!” Brian’s cry rang down the hall. “Mom! Big Paw has my marker!”
The dog ran under the dining room table. “Give it to me, Big Paw,” ordered Mother. Big Paw growled softly.
Mom reached for the marker as she spoke. This time Big Paw growled louder.
Jana laughed. “You two are doing it all wrong!” She took a small piece of cold meat from the refrigerator. “Here, Big Paw! Want some meat?” Immediately the dog dropped the marker and gobbled the food.
As Mom picked up the marker, she grinned. “To get the marker, all we had to do was offer him something better.”
Then Mom said to Jana, “Have you offered Sara something better than sin, Jana? You’ve told her all she shouldn’t do, but have you told her all the good things she would get as a Christian?”
Jana looked surprised. “No, I guess not.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you witness by telling people all the things they are doing wrong and what they have to give up? Instead, tell them about the advantages of being a Christian.
