What Mammaw Said - Actions Speak Louder Than Words

ONE SUMMER I was honored with an invitation to speak at a women’s event at a large church in the north Dallas area. Some of the women who were leaders in the congregation had become my “girlfriends” as a result of subscribing to Truth Nuggets. They asked me to speak on the Proverbs 31 woman.

Now the Proverbs 31 woman is the Bible’s version of today’s “alpha mom.” A real got-it-all-going-on type of gal.

I responded to my modern-day “church ladies” that, yes, I was very familiar with the Proverbs 31 passage and would love to dialogue with other women about who she is, what she represents, and how she is relevant to us today. And to boot, I told them, “I even know what she looks like; I have a picture of her!” You see, Mammaw was the Proverbs 31 woman in the living flesh.

Reading the Proverbs 31 passage can give even an ultra-high-achieving woman a complex, since this woman appears to be absolutely perfect. But she’s not—the Scripture just doesn’t dwell on her shortcomings. The description is merely that of a woman who contributes to her household and values her family—a woman just like you. Proverbs 31 defines those characteristics that a godly gal desires to embrace.

I won’t take you through the entire passage—you should read it for yourself—but I will share with you a few of the attributes that Mammaw had in common with the be-all, end-all woman of Lemuel’s dreams:

Who can find a virtuous and capable wife?She is more precious than rubies. (Proverbs 31:10)

To me, Mammaw sparkled with the brilliance and the elegance of the Logan sapphire. How would you like your grandchild to describe you?
