DR. KATHRYN WALDREP is one of the most precious women to walk the face of this earth. A faithful believer who opens her house every week to sixty professional women to study God’s Word, she is the most authentic, caring, and honest person I have ever met in my life.

In addition to being really real, Kathryn is a doctor. One of the first female ob/gyns in Dallas, she opened her practice with her partner in 1983 and has been voted one of the best ob/gyns by her peers for D magazine for eight consecutive years. Her gift of compassionate Christian care to her patients is renowned.

So I was shocked when Kathryn told me she almost didn’t become a doctor. “Not a doctor? Then what were you going to be?” I asked. Kathryn, a brilliant young woman, had been granted a full academic scholarship to Southern Methodist University’s school of engineering. Engineering? “You were going to be an engineer?” I laughed out loud.

As Kathryn sat in class her freshman year, she realized circuits and schematics bored her to tears. However, chemistry and the sciences had become her passion. But what to do about the scholarship?

A nineteen-year-old hailing from a small Texas community, Kathryn didn’t know how she was going to manage her tuition, books, and living expenses without her scholarship. Kathryn’s mother insisted Kathryn do the logical thing and graduate with her engineering degree. But Kathryn sat at the crossroads, knowing that if she didn’t follow her heart now—she might never have the chance again.

How easy it is to make decisions based on logic—especially when we’re scared, broke, and without the emotional support of others.

Kathryn is hands down the strongest Christian and the greatest prayer warrior I have ever met. And she gets what few of us are willing to learn: God will put in our heart what he wants us to do. It’s up to us to have the courage to follow.
