THIS HYMN was originally written as a Sunday school song with the title “Come, Children, Join to Sing.” But since adults, too, found great joy in the song, the title was changed.
After studying to become a minister in a Moravian church, Christian Bateman pastored several Congregational churches in England and Scotland and finally ended up in the Church of England. It was as if his whole career welcomed all believers, of all denominations, to “join to sing, Alleluia! Amen!”
The words alleluia and amen are both from the Bible. We find alleluia (or hallelujah) frequently in the Psalms. It means, “Praise the Lord!” We find amen at the end of prayers and at the beginning of some of Jesus’ statements. Whenever He says, “Truly, truly I say to you,” in the original language it’s “Amen, amen I say to you.” Amen means “assuredly,” “indeed,” or “so be it.”
Be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
