A Wonderful Savior Is Jesus My Lord
A Wonderful Savior Is Jesus My Lord
A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
A wonderful Savior to me;
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock,
Where rivers of pleasure I see.
He hideth my soul in the cleft of the rock
That shadows a dry, thirsty land;
He hideth my life in the depths of His love,
And covers me there with His hand,
And covers me there with His hand.
A wonderful Savior is Jesus my Lord,
He taketh my burden away;
He holdeth me up, and I shall not be moved,
He giveth me strength as my day.
With numberless blessings each moment He crowns,
And, filled with His fulness divine,
I sing in my rapture, “O glory to God
For such a Redeemer as mine!”
When clothed in His brightness transported I rise,
To meet Him in clouds of the sky,
His perfect salvation, His wonderful love,
I’ll shout with the millions on high.
AS A BLIND PERSON, Fanny Crosby faced daily insecurity. That is why she found so much comfort in the book of Psalms, and why so many of her hymns point to the security we have in the Lord. Perhaps that is why this gospel song was one of her favorites. Like David in the desert, she sometimes felt alone and vulnerable. But she found comfort in the psalmist’s figures of speech. In the words of Scripture she prayed, “Hide me,” and many psalms would come to mind (e.g., Psalms 17:8; 27:5; 31:20; 32:7). She seemed to focus on Psalms 62–64.
Another psalm image, “the cleft of the Rock,” has special meaning for Christians because we know that Jesus is the Rock who was broken for us. When we consider how the hand of God covers us, shielding us from harm, we can only express praise to God. “O glory to God for such a Redeemer as mine!” What wonderful security we have in Him!
The one thing I ask of the Lord— the thing I seek most— is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. . . . For he will conceal me there when troubles come; he will hide me in his sanctuary. He will place me out of reach on a high rock.
Psalm 27:4-5
