Jesus, Our Compassionate Healer

Jesus, Our Compassionate Healer

Wherever he went, he healed people of every sort of disease and illness. He felt great pity for the crowds that came, because their problems were so great and they didn’t know where to go for help. Matthew 9:35-36

What a beautiful picture of Jesus, and what a comfort it is to know that he is moved with compassion as he looks upon people with great problems, people who need healing—people like you and me who don’t know where to go for relief of their pain. Out of his compassion, he reaches out to heal them. Jesus, the exact representation of God, shows us what our Jehovah-rophi (the Lord who Heals) looks like and how he responds to hurting people. Healing is not an activity God may choose to do or choose not to do. Healing is who he is; it is his very nature, reflected in his name.

God wants to heal you. He wants to bring you to the complete wholeness he created you for, and he has already begun to do so. It is a work he began at the Cross and will complete when he comes again. He has atoned for sin, which is the deepest, most destructive hurt in your life. He has destroyed its power to rule your life and determine your destiny. But Jesus did not die on the cross simply to save your physical body. He died to save your eternal soul, the essence of who you are. His purpose in your life is not to give you a certain number of days on this earth, but to fit you—body and soul—for an eternity with him.

Some use the Scripture to say that God has promised to heal your body if you pray a certain way or with a certain person. But God has not promised you a long life in this body on this earth. He has promised you a perfected body in a perfect place for an eternity. Would you be willing to stop holding on to this life with such vigor so you can open your hands and heart to welcome the ultimate healing God has promised you?

Do you need the gentle touch of the Healer today? Are you longing to see a relationship restored, a disappointment soothed, a lingering ache relieved? Come to Jesus, who is moved by the pain in your life. Lay it before him and ask him to touch you with his hand of healing.

Gentle Healer, how we need your touch to soothe our ailing bodies, our aching hearts, our troubled minds, and our weary souls. Have compassion on us in our pain, and reach out to us as we reach out for you.
