Snakebit

Snakebit

These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe: They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages. They will be able to handle snakes with safety, and if they drink anything poisonous, it won’t hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed. Mark 16:17-18

It was well past midnight in the emergency room when a new patient arrived. As I walked into the exam room, it was obvious that Bobby and his drinking buddy had spent the night in a smoky bar. They reeked of alcohol and cigarettes.

Bobby held up his right hand. It was swollen to twice the size of his left.

“Got bit by a copperhead,” he said. “But we caught him. I got him in a feed sack in the back of the truck.”

I took a look at his hand, which revealed two tiny puncture marks consistent with a snakebite. He was telling the truth. From the swelling, I could tell the venom was spreading. If he wasn’t so intoxicated, he’d be experiencing severe pain.

“What were you doing with a poisonous snake at midnight?” I asked.

“My buddy and I were driving down Possum Swallow Road near the creek. The snake was smack-dab in the middle of the road.”

“Okay, but how’d you get bit?”

“I got out of my truck and tried to catch it right behind the eyes. But I guess he had too much wiggle room.”

As I began to treat his snakebite, I silently prayed two prayers.

Father, help me to do your healing work on this snakebite. And help Bobby to make the changes in his life that will give him a better future.

By the next morning, the antivenin had proven effective, and the booze had worn off. Though Bobby was likely to have some pain for a while, he was fortunate. We can all thank the Lord for saving us, even when we’re not using our God-given sense.

Today’s verse says that “miraculous signs will accompany those who believe.” My prayer for Bobby’s healing had been answered, but only time would tell if my prayer for his future would also be answered. But I believe in a God of miracles and second chances.
