Conversations With A Friend

Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Psalm 37:4

Have you ever prayed for something that your heart intensely desired?

Sometimes, it can seem selfish to pray for our requests when we look around and see illness, poverty, and hunger. How do we ask for the things we want when so many single moms, orphans, and war refugees have more important needs?

Yet, in today’s verse, God invites us to embrace his love and take delight in him. He wants us to know him so intimately that his desires will be ours as well.

Many times I haven’t felt worthy of asking God for my desires. I would tell myself he’s too busy to be bothered. But that’s not what he says.

He says we should take delight in becoming closer to him. He says that he will know our desires—those things that are unique to us and those things that are buried deep in our souls. God knows them, even if we’ve never put words to them, because God know us intimately.

I know what God has done for me. There is nothing I have to do to earn his favor. All I have to do is delight in him, and he knew the desires of my heart without me whispering a word.

God wants that kind of closeness and intimacy with all of his children. He wants that with you.

Take a moment today to delight in him. Start by telling him three things you love and adore about him and listen closely as he responds to you. You and I are both worthy because we are sons and daughters of the King. And that is something we can all delight in!

Be still and know that your heavenly Father is also your closest and most intimate friend—the kind of friend who knows what you want before you even say it.

Jesus, you are the King of kings enthroned in heaven, and yet you bow down to listen to my prayers, to know me intimately, and to give me the desires of my heart. I can’t help but delight in you. I’m completely unworthy, but you count me as righteous. Thank you.
