Job-related Benefits Of Taking Christ To Work

When I moved to Cheatham County, I was the third doctor in the county. Though I knew that at least one of the other two doctors was a believer, I also knew that he believed it was best to separate his faith from his work. That made me the only openly Christian doctor practicing in that rural community.

For me, the decision to be both a Christian and a Christian doctor was an easy one. Though it seemed that some people were able to put their faith and their work into separate boxes, God had always jumbled my boxes together. There was no way I could function as a doctor without God’s backing or leading.

So often in today’s world, we live our Christian lives apart from everything else we do. We don’t want to be perceived as ignorant and politically incorrect or narrow-minded. But in my experience, following Jesus is the most politically correct and open-minded thing we could ever do. Jesus taught us to love one another. And he taught us to win others to faith through our love for them and each other. My faith doesn’t make me intolerant, it makes me more loving. I have never met a patient for whom I didn’t wish the best, regardless of what his or her beliefs were.

As Christians, our position is one of serving and pointing the way to God. Just as the gospel and healing went hand in hand in today’s verse—in fact, in the whole New Testament—I’ve learned they go hand in hand in my office too. Years of practicing medicine as an openly Christian doctor have given me the opportunity to share my faith in ways that encourage others who are experiencing the greatest hurts this broken world has to offer. I’ve received countless invitations to be with families and be a part of their conversations during their most trying hours. Being asked to pray with and for a patient in one of those situations is one of the greatest gifts of living an openly Christian lifestyle at work.
