Jesus Has Command Over Disease And Time

Suddenly, a man with leprosy approached him and knelt before him. “Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.” Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared. Matthew 8:2-3

As soon as Eve took the first bite from the forbidden fruit, she blamed the serpent. Adam also took a bite, and he blamed Eve. Today, we live in a broken world where we often want to blame others for our problems. When we think we’ve been wronged, whether by our parents, our boss, or our politicians, we want retribution and repair. And we want it done yesterday!

When something goes awry and doesn’t turn out the way you think it should, do you look for someone or something else to blame?

When we look for the causes of sin and disease, it’s often easy to point to things that someone else should have done differently. But we’re all guilty and responsible for our separation from God and for spoiling the perfect world he designed for us. When we fell away from God through our disobedience, sin and disease entered the world.

Jesus came to restore that broken relationship. As part of that restoration, he sometimes heals people who are sick. In today’s verse, we see a leper who could have blamed others for the disease that had likely left him scarred and missing fingers or toes. Instead, he reached out to Jesus, believing that he alone could heal him.

To fix this man’s medical problems would have taken years of modern medical treatment, but Jesus not only healed the leper completely, he healed him instantly. When Jesus performed this miracle, he repaired what was broken in this man’s life. In doing so, he took control not only of the disease, but also of time. It was a perfect example of Jesus’ authority and sovereignty over the world.

TODAY’S RX

The next time you’re tempted to blame someone else or demand that what’s broken be fixed immediately, let go of your expectations and allow God to heal what is broken. And let him do it in his perfect timing.

Lord, help me to be honest and humble. I know my sin is a result of my own actions and no one else’s; and I know that my saving grace is from you and no one else. May I grow to resemble you more closely every day of my life.
