In God’s Time, It’s Never Too Late
Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping—believing that he would become the father of many nations. For God had said to him, “That’s how many descendants you will have!” And Abraham’s faith did not weaken, even though, at about 100 years of age, he figured his body was as good as dead—and so was Sarah’s womb. Romans 4:18-19
The woman in my office reminded me of Abraham’s wife, Sarah. She had three beautiful children, and she and her husband had decided to try for a fourth, but after three first-trimester miscarriages, they had just about given up hope. Her obstetrician had told her that her body wouldn’t be able to carry another baby.
As she sat in my office, she listed off some vague symptoms of tiredness and nausea and then said, “I know it’s unlikely that I’d be pregnant at forty-three, but would you do a pregnancy test just to make sure?”
“Of course,” I said.
A woman can still be fertile at forty-three, but this “Sarah” believed it was impossible for her.
We drew her blood, and a few hours later I called her with the result. “The test came back positive. Congratulations!”
As I hung up the phone, I knew she still had many difficult hurdles to face, not the least of which was the first trimester. Would this pregnancy have the same outcome as the last three?
But just as with the biblical Sarah, God showered his grace on this family. Not only did she carry this surprise baby to full term, but she and her husband found new life and joy as the parents of four.
