God’s Grace Is For All

God knows people’s hearts, and he confirmed that he accepts Gentiles by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as he did to us. He made no distinction between us and them, for he cleansed their hearts through faith. . . . We believe that we are all saved the same way, by the undeserved grace of the Lord Jesus. Acts 15:8-9, 11

At times, there are calls from the EMS radio that send shivers down your spine. We got one of those on an otherwise quiet weekend night.

“EMS en route to your facility. MVA. DUI suspected.”

As we set up the trauma room for unknown injuries from the motor vehicle accident, we found out there were three victims. One had already been airlifted to Nashville. The other two were being transported by ambulance to our hospital.

The first patient to arrive was the wife of the driver who had been airlifted. When they brought her in, she was crying—not due to her injuries, but for her husband. “Please, doctor, can you find out what happened to my husband? They took him away in a helicopter, and I don’t even know if he’s dead or alive!”

I nodded at the EMT, and he left to find out the husband’s status, while I cleaned up the wife’s wounds. She mostly had minor cuts and bruises. While I worked, we prayed for her husband and for God to intervene.

When the EMT returned, he said, “The report is better than we expected. The husband has a ruptured spleen, but they’re able to treat it, and everything looks good.”

As I walked down the hall to check on the third victim, the drunk driver who had caused the accident, I thanked God for protecting the two innocent victims from greater harm. In the exam room, I found a middle-aged man who was still very inebriated. I checked him out to confirm what the nurse had already determined—there wasn’t a scratch on him.

The police requested blood tests, and we decided to hold him overnight to make sure his alcohol levels were safely down before he was taken to jail.

Too often, trauma codes end with the veil of heaven being pulled back to welcome a new soul. But this time, God had been gracious to everyone involved, giving them all more days here on earth.

God shines the light of his mercy on both the evil and the good. Be thankful for his gracious wisdom.

Lord, thank you for pouring out your lavish love on all your people. Help me to reflect that love to all I meet, even those who have hurt me.
