I Was Blind, But Now I See

They went right into the house where he was staying, and Jesus asked them, “Do you believe I can make you see?” “Yes, Lord,” they told him, “we do.” Then he touched their eyes and said, “Because of your faith, it will happen.” Matthew 9:28-29

Have you ever been blind to an opportunity and didn’t see what you were missing until it was too late? In today’s verses, Jesus asks two blind men whether they believe he is capable of helping them see. Because of their profession of faith, he heals them.

Most people are born with good vision. For those of us who aren’t, we have corrective lenses to help us see what we’re missing. So it may be hard for us to imagine how these blind men felt when Jesus restored their sight and suddenly they could see for the first time.

When I was eighteen, I wanted to be an Air Force pilot. As a part of the eligibility requirements, I had to pass a physical and have good stamina and perfect eyesight. Having grown up on a farm, working six days a week from daylight until past dark, I knew I had the physical attributes. And because I could shoot a squirrel on the run at 150 feet with a .22 rifle, I was confident about my eyesight. Though the exam proved more challenging than I expected—only half the applicants made it through—I passed with flying colors.

Two years later, when I went back for my final exam before starting flight school, I was stunned when I didn’t pass the vision test. My eyes had deteriorated to 20/100, and I was no longer eligible to be a pilot. My career path had flown off course, and my future was dark. And the same could be said for my spiritual life at the time. Blind to my future, and blind to God, I followed the advice I was given and went to medical school.

It wasn’t until Jesus opened my eyes on the night I gave my heart back to him that I caught my first glimpse of his future plan for me to help the sick and the poor. Looking back on my life now, I can clearly see that God was with me the whole time.

Ask Jesus to open your eyes and give you a vision for what he has planned for your life.

Open my eyes to my future, Lord. Show me the plans and purpose you have for me. Help me to be obedient to your calling and serve you with all of my heart, soul, and strength.
