Faith Without Doubt

Jesus told them, “I tell you the truth, if you have faith and don’t doubt, you can do things like this and much more. You can even say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen.” Matthew 21:21

“I’ve been having pains in my right side on and off for about six months,” Bill said. “But recently it’s gotten worse. I think it might be a gallbladder attack.”

“Why don’t you lie back and let me take a look,” I said.

Bill reclined on the exam table as I examined his abdominal area. He had moderate to severe pain with bloating and cramping in the upper right quadrant. But when I felt his abdomen, I knew it was more than what we first expected. His liver was approximately two centimeters below the ridge of his ribs, and it felt a bit firm.

Bill had never been a drinker or an IV drug user. He had four healthy children, and there had never been any family history of liver disease.

“I’d like for you to have an ultrasound, but the tech isn’t in today, so I’m going to order a CT scan instead.”

“I’m sure it’s just my gallbladder acting up,” Bill said, but he agreed to the scan.

When the results came back, they confirmed my suspicions and Bill’s worst fear. He had liver cancer. I sat down with him to go over the results.

“How much time do I have left?” he asked. He was a Bible-believing Christian, and he respected my opinion.

“The textbooks say six months to a year, but we both know that with God anything is possible.”

Today’s verse reminds us that not only can God do incredible things, but we can do those same things and much more if we have faith and don’t doubt. Bill lived for another four and a half years before God called him home to his complete healing in heaven. I consider those extra four years to be a mountain moved.

Help me to put my full confidence in you, Father, knowing you are capable of all things. Do not let me doubt your goodness, but remember how you’ve always been faithful to me.
