A New Home Awaits

A New Home Awaits

You have decided the length of our lives. You know how many months we will live, and we are not given a minute longer. Job 14:5

The news wasn’t good. The test results revealed that Gregory wouldn’t be around much longer. He’d fought long and hard against the cancer, but the cancer had spread and was starting to shut down his organs. I needed to be the one to deliver the news to him—one of the least favorite parts of my job.

I entered his room just as the late evening shadows began to stretch from his window toward the white sheets of his hospital bed. I pulled up a chair next to him and gave him the news he was expecting.

“We know our time on this earth is short, and I’m afraid, Gregory, that yours is coming to an end. We’ve fought hard together to battle this cancer, but it has finally won.”

“There is nothing else to do?” he asked.

“We’ve turned over every stone. The best doctors at the Mayo Clinic and the MD Anderson Cancer Center have seen you. They’ve both told you the same thing. There isn’t anything more we can do.”

“I guess that means that death has won.”

“Over the past five years of this journey, we’ve talked about how death is the key to life. Jesus died so that you may live for eternity. Though your life ends here on earth, there is a forever home waiting for you in heaven with our Lord and Savior.”

“So my days on earth are numbered, but my days in heaven will be innumerable.”

“That is true for all of us who have accepted Jesus as Lord. We have prayed for your body, mind, and soul to be healed for the past five years. Now you will see that healing completed.”

“I want to live each day here that I can, but I also look forward to seeing Jesus.”

“As you live out your remaining hours, I think you will begin to see the new life that awaits you with Jesus, and you will look forward to your new home. Just know that your last breath here will be followed by a breath of the sweet air of heaven.”
