A Child By Faith

It was by faith that even Sarah was able to have a child, though she was barren and was too old. She believed that God would keep his promise. Hebrews 11:11

Melissa was forty-three, and her husband was approaching fifty. They had a good marriage and had tried to have children but had been unsuccessful. Over the years, the constant reminder of not having children took its toll on both of them. Being childless for life seemed too much to bear.

One desperate day, they both poured their hearts out to God in prayer. Afterward, they believed that God had chosen a different path for them—adoption. They started to investigate. With help from their family and aid from a charity, the cost was within their means. Though it would take a little longer than nine months, they proceeded as if they were expecting.

When the time came, they traveled to the other side of the world to meet their precious baby girl. Conditions were not great in their new daughter’s home country, and traveling with an infant was grueling. Melissa was exhausted by the time she returned home.

A few days later, I met Melissa when she brought Lily to my office for an initial checkup. After I examined Lily, Melissa said, “Do you have time to work me in too? I’m not feeling well after this trip. I want to get up with Lily at night, but I’m so exhausted I can’t seem to get out of bed. I don’t know if the trip took all my strength or if I caught something while I was traveling.”

A physical exam didn’t reveal anything abnormal, so I did a blood workup to see what that would reveal.

I called Melissa the next day at home. “It looks like Lily is going to have a little brother or sister. Congratulations! You’re pregnant!”

Melissa and her husband thought Melissa’s time to have a baby had passed, but they stepped out in faith to the calling that God set before them. It turns out that God didn’t think Melissa’s time had passed; he thought it was a great time to give Lily a little sister.
